You ask Owen to draw himself, and he comes up with some weird stuff that makes everyone go “what!?”.

Seriously though, I kinda have to break out of character here in order to say a few things about this drawing.

Before I started drawing this, I had already chosen the style in which I would do it, and I knew it would have to be a rather weird drawing because it’s the style of someone who’s really good at drawing weird stuff, and I love weird stuff. This drawing was originally weirder than that, actually; I had drawn an eye in Owen’s hand, and some stuff in the background, but I painted over it (with a not fully opaque brush, so there may be some traces of what was originally there; can if you figure out what it was?).

Whose style did I mimic, I hear you ask?

Well, it was Maruki Hurakami’s style (marukihurakami.tumblr.com;marukihurakami.deviantart.com). Actually I’m more mimicking her style from back when I met her rather than her current style. Who is Maruki? Well, she’s a person I like to think of as a friend, although we rarely talk to each other nowadays (which is mostly my fault I guess). I met her on the internet on the 15th of February, 2014*, after I talked on reddit about a novella that I had written the previous year. That novella had no final title back then, but eventually I settled on, you may have guessed it, Empty Hallways.

She helped me a lot with Empty Hallways. If you like this webcomic, you should thank her, really. If it weren’t for her editing the novella it’s based on, I probably wouldn’t be publishing it now. And even if I did start publishing it, it wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is.

Go check out her art now, she’s an amazing artist.

---

* I usually wouldn’t remember the exact date in which I met someone, because I am terrible with dates. However, in this particular case it happened to be the day after Valentine’s Day (she was replying to a post with a drawing I made for that day), so it’s pretty much impossible not to remember.

I see very faint letters at the top. Can't make out any words, which makes me think it's either code or part of a url? The 11 is mysterious as well. What a mysterious dude

To be honest, I wanted it to only really be visible if someone opened the image in an image editor and did some messing with the levels. But at the same time, no one would do that without being prompted by seeing something in the first place so... yeah.

Now, it may never be decoded if I don’t provide a couple of hints so... it’s a code, not part of a URL. And it’s not any code; it’s a specific combination of coding schemes that has been mentioned in comic, in one of the earliest pages. Ok, I’ll stop now, I may be giving away too much. I’m waiting to see when/if someone manages to decode it.

The 11 will eventually make sense.

There is one thing you should be asking yourself, though: is this the first secret message that has been hidden in this webcomic’s site?

if i didn't do any typos, then decoding it reveals "TU FUI EGO ERIS" which means.....well, it depends on the language, but none of the translations i looked up provide anything less cryptic.

Yep, that’s it. Thank you for taking the time to decode it.

Now I know I can make more complicated secret codes in the future, haha.

I am positively obsessed with things like ciphers and steganography. I have hidden a secret message at some point in pretty much every website in which I ever registered an account. Some of them are still out there, as of yet undeciphered.

Anyway, that sentence is in Latin. It means "I was you; you will be me." Some places translate it as "what you are, I was; what I am, you will be", which I think is a ridiculously long translation for such a short sentence.

According to Wikipedia, "tu fui ego eris" is "a memento mori gravestone inscription to remind the reader that death is unavoidable". You should remember that sentence. It will show up again eventually, and its purpose will be clear.

Ooh, the "I was you, you will be me" phrase sounds like it's interesting for my theory!

I'm gonna be honest, this right now is actually the most engaged I've been with any comic on the whole platform. I just realized today. Good thriller, dude.

Thank you so much! Means a lot to me knowing that some people really enjoy what I make.

This really motivates me to keep this thing going.
